Mercenary is the cheap frontline body. At one star it fills a slot when the cap is tight. The evolution line every guide names is Mercenary to Squire to Knight.

Use it as a filler or as the troop you level if you want Knight. Do not expect it to replace Spartan. Keep duplicate copies for ascension.
Halberdier and Javelineer are listed as both 1-star and 2-star in different tables. Squire, Sentinel, Longbowman, Knight, Imperial Wall, Imperial Halberdier, Rapier and Rapier Knight do not have a cost two sources share. An empty star field means the card in game is the source.
The official event lists them as Season 1 Mongol battle-pass units. October patch coverage says they are not standard banner pulls.
