How to read the boards
Frontline, ranged, cavalry and anti-shield are separate jobs. A troop in S that costs 4 stars is the wrong pick at an 8-star cap. Mongol battle-pass troops and Morningstar are documented on unit pages instead of ranked, because the public combat notes still disagree.

Two jobs, two lists. Open a child page for the long table. This hub is the snapshot.
S tier
Player decision The evolution most guides tell you to finish first if you already use archers. Aim them at a lane, and do not walk them into cavalry.
Player decision Plan the whole line if you like flanks. Charge after something else has hit the line, then leave. Do not pick it for a defense point you have to climb.
Player decision Bring it to open a shield ball, and keep a frontline in front of it. Do not treat the pull as something a small Gem budget guarantees.
Player decision Use it when the star cap can afford 4 and you need a point held. Do not auto-charge it into fresh reinforcements. Block durability was reported cut from 110 to 100 on September 21; recheck the card.
A tier
Player decision Slot it when the enemy is a melee ball and you still have star room. It is the wrong flex if Lancers are already on the field.
Player decision Equip Mace when shields are the problem and 3 stars fit. Evolve to Morningstar only after you have read the new star cost; 4 stars changes the loadout.
Player decision Best early flex and the correct troop to level if Lancer is the goal. Do not charge halberds or a ready spear line.
Player decision Prefer it over a raw shield stack when you still need to move between entrances. Confirm the 3-star cost on the card before you evolve into a cap you cannot afford.
Player decision Evolve into it only when 3 stars still fits. Stopping here is fine on a tight cap; Lancer can wait.
Player decision Bring it to crack a shield wall when you cannot also fit Mace. Skip the line if a creator's 'waste of time' note matches your own games; that verdict is one ranking, not a patch note.
Player decision Use the card's star number, not a wiki guess. Strong into shields, poor as your only troop if Flaming Archers are already shooting.
Player decision Best on a single choke where the enemy has to shoot into the shield. Weak choice if you need to chase a flank.
Player decision A frontline buy when you hit the summon, not a troop you evolve toward. Check the rate on the banner you are actually pulling.
B tier
Player decision Field it early, level it on purpose, and evolve only after ascension copies are ready. Do not judge the line by the 1-star form.
Player decision Correct first frontline while the cap is small. Replace the job, not the whole army, when Sentinel or Imperial Wall fits.
C tier
Player decision Do not chase it ahead of Spartan, Samurai or a finished evolution line unless you like the playstyle. It has no evolution to fix the frailty.
